I managed to get in a full 3 mile run today. How could I not? The weather was gorgeous. Sunny, cool and crisp. Last Tuesday, Dr. Goldman had advised me to only run a mile or so and see how things feel. Wednesday, I did 3 miles of walk/run with only 1 mile of running on the treadmill. Friday, 1.70 miles walk/run with 1.35 miles of actually running. Yesterday, I did 3.5 miles of walk/run on the treadmill with only 2 miles of runnning. When I went out today, my left ankle was a bit tight/sore but not bad enough to stop or walk. The groin area was ok; tender in the morning though. Now, 3 hours later, the ankle is a bit tender and my right knee is a little sore. The overall soreness and tenderness is not extreme, just present and not typical of pre December 2007. I see Dr. Goldman again this Tuesday - I wonder what his read on my pelvis will be.Today was the Suffolk County half marathon; I certainly was not up for that. Next Saturday is the Aspire 10K - Outside shot I may be feeling ok for that. The LI marathon (full) is definitely out and I am still thinking I may be able to do the half; otherwise I will downgrade to the 10K - time will tell.
My groin area and left foot continue to not feel right; continued tenderness and soreness. I cannot exert much more effort than eliptical cross training. Yesterday I managed to do a 40 minute workout and later a 30 minute workout. Friday I did some weights; Thursday, Dr. Goldman adjusted me and confirmed that my pelvis was out of alignment. Today I attempted to run on the treadmill but early on the discomfort was too distracting. So I did minor run/walking for 4 miles. My thinking is that sooner or later the adjustments will take hold and until then I do not want to add additional injury to the inflamed areas. This is getting boring. I want to get back to my usual routines - already I have scubbed my plans for the Suffolk County Half Marathon on March 30th and at best will do the Long Island Half Marathon in May instead of the full marahon. Tuesday, I see Dr. Goldman again.
It is so strange how my left foot, etc. vary in soreness in terms of locations and intensity. All day it felt too tender to run on. By the end of the day, I decided to put a compression sleeve on and see if I could manage three miles on the treadmill. The left side of my gut was sore but not overwelmingly. The same was true with my foot so I was able to get through a three miler at a 9:49 pace - not too bad. The thing is now a couple of hours later, my foot, etc. feel ok. I just don't get it. I am so looking forward to Thursday when I will see Dr. Goldman - hopefully his magic touch get re-align me.
I don't know where my marathon training is headed. Had to bag a 15K race today. First the weather was really sucky; second my left side still didn't feel 100% normal. My left ankle and left side of my groin continue to be sore. In lieu of the race I went to the gym and did some weights and surprisingly felt pretty good so later returned to the treadmill, but immediately felt discomfort in my ankle (different spot of course), etc. So after a mile or so moved over to the eliptical for 15 minutes.
I have begun to adjust my expectations and it looks like getting the appropriate level of prep (distance runs) in for the LI Marathon just may not happen. LI is 8 weeks away and I have 5 weeks to get to a 16-18 mile run - I think thats really pushing it given my recent spate of "injury". I may need to settle for just the LI Half. We shall see.
Yesterday was a rest day. Felt pretty exhausted, so a day off seemed the right thing to do. Today and tomorrow I have a number of workouts scheduled. Already today, I have completed a 3.25 mile treadmill run and all the parts feel ok. In fact, my left outer ankle tendon didn't bother me at all. I am not certain whether my pains and discomforts are coming from over-training or the need for an adjustment. The left ankle tendon, both ankles, right knee muscle, lower back, pubis area all have been bothering me intermittently - suggests alignment issues to me. I have a chriropractor appointment scheduled for March 13th, when Dr. Goldman returns from his vacation. Hope I can make it!
